BODY MIND LIFE YOGA                                             Nicole Goodwin/ Mark Breadner

NICOLE
Nicole Goodwin is co-founder and owner of BodyMindLife Yoga studio in Sydney, and has been practicing yoga for over 10 years and teaching for more than 7 years. Previously from the corporate world, Nicole’s desire for a lifestyle that was more holistic and empowering led her to embark upon a life-changing journey, studying with prominent teachers around the world. Her own growth and evolution through the many practices and styles of yoga has been the creative inspiration for BodyMindLife Yoga Centre. Nicole’s teachers include Shiva Rea, Baron Baptiste, and Mark Breadner.

The roots of Nicole’s teachings are expressed through the creativity of her own personal style, her in-depth studies of yoga and Ayurveda (Diploma of Health – Yoga Teaching), bodywork (Diploma of Remedial Massage) and energetic healing. Her passion is for Vinyasa yoga, focusing on the integration of breath and movement, awareness and alignment, strength and flexibility, effort and ease.

Her dynamic classes are a combination of breath inspired movement and creative, yet balanced and intelligent, sequencing that allows individuals to experience greater ease and vitality – moving from “doing yoga” to “being yoga”. Nicole recently assisted her teacher, Shiva Rea, at the Asia Yoga Conference in Hong Kong, and continues to study with her through her global retreats and teacher intensives.

Nicole’s desire is to encourage individuals to bring themselves back to balance through yoga, and lifestyle choices that help them move in the direction of wellbeing. She leads yoga retreats and teacher training's in Australia and internationally.

Nicole shares her knowledge of yoga through her monthly column in Women's Health Magazine.

MARK
Mark Breadner has been practicing yoga for over thirty-five years, after being introduced as a child by his mum, a yoga teacher. The roots of Mark’s teachings come from a background working in the field of Somatic Psychotherapy, studying and practicing many of the more popular styles of yoga and in-depth studies of Tibetan Buddhism. He has taught yoga for 20 years and has devoted the last decade to training yoga teachers, through the Heart of Yoga Association, Nature Care College and now BodyMindLife Yoga. Mark’s extensive work in corrective exercise therapy and injury rehabilitation, combined with qualifications in Exercise Kinesiology through the Chek Institute has

led him to work and travel regularly with elite athletes such as members of the Australian Olympic Swimming Team and members of the Rip Curl pro-surf team.

His years of work and study in complementary Eastern and Western systems of health have led Mark to develop a holistic system of healing called “The Five Pillars of Health and Wellbeing”. Through this system, Mark’s focus is to help people heal themselves through life-style observances and practices that strengthen and purify the nervous system, increase vitality in the body and serenity in the mind. He teaches people to self-regulate – to recognize where they are out of balance, and to apply specific practices that restore harmony, balance and the natural flow of energy (prana). Mark’s drive is to take the esoteric principles of yoga and make them practical and applicable to modern-day living.

BYRON YOGA CENTRE                                              John Ogilvie

Celebrating its 20th year of serving the yoga community, Byron Yoga Centre offers pre-eminent yoga teacher training courses, classes, workshops and retreats in Byron Bay, Sydney and internationally.

JOHN OGILVIE
John is the founder and Director of Byron Yoga Centre.  He has been teaching for over 20 years and offers his wealth of experience to teach others how to teach, heading up an internationally well-regarded Teacher Training Program at the Centre

John invites us to challenge ourselves, but at the same time encourages a light-heartedness in our approach to yoga and to ourselves.

BYRON YOGA CENTRE’S STYLE – PURNA YOGA
‘Purna’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘complete’ or ‘full’ and encapsulates the unique style of yoga that is taught at Byron Yoga Centre.

“Purna also means integrated”, says John.  “And this is what our approach to yoga is all about”.

John enthuses that yoga is about a lot more than just the physical postures.  Purna Yoga teaches the wholstic path to yoga that is embodied within the ancient system called ‘Astanga Yoga’ or the ‘8-Limbs’.  Asana (the yoga postures) is just one of the 8 limbs which also shares equal emphasis with the other limbs including Pranayama (breath control), meditation, and a code of personal and social yogic ‘ethics’ (the yamas & niyamas).

“Our classes are a reflection of these principals”, says John.  “yoga philosophies, for example that of ahimsa (non violence), are threaded throughout our classes”.

This helps bring about a deeper understanding of the key yogic values including diet and lifestyle aspirations.  Many Byron Yoga Centre Teacher Trainees discover, as a consequence, that yoga becomes for them a ‘way of life’.

“If all that you are interested in is the Asana (postures), then our courses may not be for you!” John sums up.

DANCING WARRIOR YOGA                                        Mathew Bergan

An energy shifter…..a physical sculptor…..a soulful jester,

Dancing Warrior Yoga balances the body and mind through the energy of motion and the heart of self-realization. At the centre of this practice lies the courage of the warrior - one who fears not to stand alone in displeasure or delight and dance with the greater Self.

Mathew Bergan has devised a style for those that have yoga on their mind and movement in their bones. His style fuses the kinetic qualities of contemporary dance with the muscular/skeletal foundations of Hatha yoga and cyclic breathing. Each class stretches, strengthens and tones the body while drawing upon a measured breath cycle. The classes are enjoyable and informative, offering every student the chance to experience their bodies and minds intelligently.

Mathew completed his yoga teacher training with Yoga Synergy. His evolving teaching style has been shaped by various traditions including ashtanga vinyasa and Iyengar yoga.

Mathew runs 2 yoga studios in Chippendale and St Peters that he established in 2004 offering drop-in yoga classes and courses. Since 2000 he has operated Dancing Warrior Yoga and Pilates agency locating teachers in the business sector.

IYENGAR YOGA                                                         Pixie Lillas
Pixie Lillas began practicing Iyengar Yoga in 1976 with Dona Holleman in Italy. She co-founded the Balmain Iyengar Yoga Studio in 1980 and has been director and principal teacher there ever since. As well as teaching at the BYS Pixie runs teacher training courses and workshops in Australia and in Europe. She has been closely involved with the BKS Iyengar Yoga Association since it started in 1985 and currently holds an Advanced Junior teaching certificate.

The Iyengar approach to yoga is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga expounded by Patanjali in his classic treatise, The Yoga Sutras, written over 2,500 years ago.  It is a disciplined and deeply researched system developed over 75 years by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar who still practices daily – exploring, studying, writing and teaching about yoga.

What is unique about Iyengar Yoga is that it is characterized in the practice of asana and pranayama with the innovative approach emphasizing precision and alignment, planned sequencing, timing and the use of props.  This approach has allowed people of varying ages, levels of health and fitness to enjoy the benefits which a sustained practice can bring – the ability to face the physical, mental and emotional challenges of contemporary life with strength, vitality, mobility, thoughtfulness and equanimity.

Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness and is open to all levels. The combination of yoga postures with detailed breath patterns and specific repetition of sounds makes the practice particularly transformative. Each set of exercises targets particular areas of the physical body but also the energetic meridians of the body that helps release blockages. NATURE CARE COLLEGE                                           Fabio Fabbri

The practice of Yoga is rooted in the heart of mystical India. Yoga is a path to enlightenment, a way to re-connect with God.
Amidst the very many different branches that Yoga has spread, the western world has mainly grasped the more practical approach of Hatha Yoga. It is the work of BKS Iyengar and Swami Satyananda Saraswati that brought it to light outside the Asian continent for the first time. Many other teachers and “styles” have been flowering since then to make Yoga now days a very well known practice.
People are mostly attracted by the physical exercises, the mental strength derived, the lightness and feeling of relaxation that come with it.

ABOUT FABIO….
Fabio left Italy to travel the world for 12 years. The many cultures and people he encountered have shaped his approach to life. This is very much felt in the way Fabio teaches yoga where individuality, passion and humour are emphasized, with great respect for all the ancient traditions.

He is especially grateful to his teachers for helping him deepen his experience with the more profound aspects of yoga, such as the Shatkarmas, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and the more esoteric meditation techniques. Fabio believes strongly in meeting his students’ needs and designing a personalised practice to help them develop more their body-mind awareness. His personal approach ‘on the mat’ is a combination of classical Hatha Yoga and Vinyasa, where movement meets breath to create a flowing meditation.

Fabio is particularly passionate about the principles and practices that take place ‘off the mat’ but that he believes are essential for a more authentic way of yogic life.

He teaches at Nature Care College and also works from his private practice in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

PREMA SHANTI RETREAT                                          Mara Staffieri

Mara Staffieri is the co-founder and director of the Prema Shanti Meditation and Yoga Retreat. Mara began her yoga practice in 1986 and has been teaching yoga for over 10 years, holding yoga retreats in both Australia and New Zealand. Mara has just recently finished teaching yoga to students in the one year yoga teacher diploma at the Wellpark College of Natural Therapies in New Zealand. Her yoga philosophy and training has been influenced by both the Iyengar and Astanga yoga traditions. Over the 20 year period that she has been practicing and teaching yoga, she has developed her own unique vibrant teaching style which is dynamic, inspirational and motivational, underlined with sound anatomical, physiological and biomechanical principles, emphasizing Intention, Breath and Movement. The cornerstone of her teaching philosophy is the idea that the concepts of Yoga must be first understood through the body, and the dynamic, conscious practice of asana, and meditation. The Prema Shanti  Meditation and Yoga Retreat was created to facilitate Mara’s teaching  methods,  which are a blending of Vinyasa, Iyengar, Astanga yoga, and the teachings of the yoga sutras, coupled with her unique approach to sequencing that is specifically designed to meet the needs of today’s yoga student.

QI NATURAL THERAPIES & YOGA                              Mark O’Brien

Mark teaches a compassionate and practical style of Hatha Vinyasa Yoga bringing careful attention to the breath and alignment to let life and energy flow effortlessly through every aspect of your being. The focus is on developing practical skills that transform the quality of your daily life. (There's no point in learning the perfect head-stand if it doesn't make your life better in some way!)
With a diploma in Remedial Massage and experience in meditation and somatic therapy, he remains in awe of the joyful way that skilful physical movement and attention to the breath can radically improve our mood, energy, health and outlook on the physical world. Flexibility –or lack of it- is of little importance in this approach which is open to anyone who can breathe and sincerely wants to improve their life.
He has trained with many respected Yoga teachers including TKV Desikachar and his son Kausthub Desikachar and Rodney Yee. His current teacher over several years is Donna Farhi.
The 12 month Teacher-training Diploma course is internationally recognized as an opportunity to develop your personal practice and understanding of Yoga whilst learning how to teach in a safe, supportive environment.

Like our Yoga timetable at Qi Natural Therapies & Yoga, this is a “non-denominational” course, training you in the broad tradition of Classical Hatha Yoga, and will expose you to elements of several popular styles of asana practice without favouring any style over another. Our core values emphasise safety and an individualised approach over dogma, and we encourage you to explore your own practice and experience of Yoga.

SAMADHI YOGA                                                        Sarah Trestail

Sarah is one of only 5 certified Jivamukti Yoga teachers in Australia, having trained intensively in the US with founders of Jivamukti style, Sharon Gannon and David Life. Sarah also holds an Advanced Power Yoga certification completed through Corepower Yoga in Hawaii, Thai Yoga Massage certification through Sunshine Network in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as well as general Hatha qualifications. She currently teaches on Samadhi Yoga’s Teacher Training program and conducts workshops around Australia. As well as her Jivamukti mentors her teaching has been strongly influenced by Seane Corn and Sri Dharma Mittra.

Growing up as a dancer, Sarah has always been interested in movement and as such has undertaken studies in Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Sydney. As a result, Sarah’s classes have significant focus on alignment and working safely and effectively with injuries.

Sarah’s classes are dynamic, uplifting and brimming with juicy yoga philosophy creating a solid foundation of understanding in her students. Sarah combines strong asana (postures) in a flowing vinyasa style with meditation, pranayama (breathing techniques) and Sanskrit chant, providing an extremely well rounded and versatile experience that will leave you wanting more. A feature of Jivamukti classes is the use of a wide variety of music to serve as the theme of the class rather than being just a part of the background ambience, the music becomes a tool to focus, uplift and drive the teachings.

Sarah is currently studying a Bachelor of Community Development with Murdoch University and has recently established the non-profit organisation “Agents of Harmony” that uses yoga as the vehicle to raise funds and awareness for populations in critical need.

THE CENTRE OF YOGA ZEN KI YOGA                        Janie Larmour

Janie Larmour has been working with groups and individuals for 15 years with personal training and yoga.  She has been teaching Zen Ki Yoga for the last 8 years since studying Ki Yoga, although she has been heavily influenced by the similar Ryoho style of yoga.  She has trained many celebrities and personalities from the film, fashion and music industries.  She has featured in and written for many magazine and newspaper articles, appeared several times on “Fresh” on Channel 9 and is currently a regular guest on WIN TV’s “Susie”.

Zen Ki Yoga is so different to anything you’ve ever done before!  It is a Japanese form of yoga based on shiatsu therapy focusing on aligning and supporting your body with the changes of the season by strengthening your organs, balancing your energy and keeping the energy flowing correctly through your body’s meridians.  As it strengthens your body internally and corrects imbalances and weaknesses, you are able to address specific areas for weight loss and strength.

Janie will be holding a Charity Yoga Marathon for Day of Difference Foundation on 7, 8 & 9 November at her yoga studio, The Centre of Yoga.  This is to raise money for children and their families who have suffered injury through accidents and to raise awareness about people with differences and disabilities.  The Day of Difference Foundation also provides equipment to the Skin Laboratory, Burns Unit, Concord Repatriation General Hospital; Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

TRANSMISSION MEDITATION                                   Seiji Funamoto

This meditation is a virtual 'hot house' for the spiritual growth of those who participate on a consistent basis. It provides a vehicle for service affecting the entire evolution of humanity for the better.
Transmission Meditation enhances any other development practice currently used by the individual, and the potency of energies released during meditation can initiate powerful healing experiences.  Thousands of people around the world are joining together to aid in the work of transmitting these powerful spiritual energies for the benefit of humanity and construction of a new world based on Brotherhood, Sharing and Justice.
With the advent of the Aquarian Age, this new opportunity is available to those who seek to serve their fellow human beings.  Under the experienced guidance and direction of the Spiritual Hierarchy of our planet, the energies of Love and Light and Power can be safely 'stepped down'.  These energies facilitate the difficult changes now in progress and speed the transformations leading to a better world for all."

YOGA SYNERGY                                                        Simon Borg-Olivier

Simon was first introduced to yoga at age six learning breath retentions from his father, then the main bandhas (internal locks) from Basil Brown (an Olympic athlete). At age 17, a Tibetan Lama introduced Simon to the philosophy of yoga. In 1980, Simon started the postures and movements of hatha yoga eventually learning with BKS Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois and TKV Desikachar. Simon commenced teaching in 1982.

Simon met his main teacher Natanaga Zhander (Shandor Remete) in 1985. Zhander remains an inspiration and mentor to this day.

In 1988, Simon met physiotherapist and yoga teacher Bianca Machliss. Together Simon and Bianca have developed the unique YogaSynergy system over the last 20 years. Simon is co-author (with Bianca Machliss) of ‘Applied Anatomy and Physiology of Yoga’, which is the main text book for a course he developed and lectures in at RMIT University (Melbourne).
