9.45 am                Noelene Francis                                                DRU YOGA

Noelene Francis
Noelene is one of the first Australian trained Dru Yoga teachers and is now a Senior Tutor on the Dru Yoga Teacher Training and Dru Meditation Teacher Training courses, and teaches workshops around Australia.  She has run her own yoga school in Canberra for the past ten years, and also leads sound workshops and kirtan sessions.

* What is unique about Dru Yoga?

Dru Yoga gives you body-mind wellbeing—with ease. Tailored for modern living yet firmly rooted in ancient yoga tradition, Dru’s flowing style is suitable for everyone, of all ages and body shapes. It includes classical yoga postures, pranayama (the science of breath), mudras (hand gestures), positive affirmations, empowering visualisations, relaxations and soothing meditations.

  • Joints are kept relaxed and soft during movement (as in tai chi). This creates flexibility and a free flow of subtle energy.
  • In Dru Yoga all movements originate from the spine because a flexible, healthy spine supports your entire yoga practice.
  • Dru’s unique Energy Block Release sequences are easy-to-practise, flowing movements that help to release tension physically, mentally and emotionally.
  • The spinal wave and spinal twist are core features of Dru, enhancing spinal health and vitality.
  • Dru Yoga works to balance the chakras (energy centres of the body) and access the powerful energy of the heart.
  • A deep understanding of core stability is a major focus.
  • Within the flow of movement, Dru Yoga creates powerful moments of stillness which we call ‘Dru points’.

11.15 am              Edna Reinhardt                                                 CREATIVE YOGA GAMES FOR KIDS

Edna Reinhardt came to Australia as a five year old with her parents from Israel. At thirteen she had her first introduction to yoga. From that time, yoga discipline with its unique focus on the connection between mind and body, has been an integral part of her personal and professional life. Edna studied yoga and creative dance under the highly esteemed educator, Dorothea Mangiamele at Mangala Studios in Melbourne. Mangiamele’s distinctive style of creative dance was underpinned by Yoga. This association profoundly influenced Edna’s approach to yoga and dance education.
Edna established her first school of yoga and dance in New South Wales in 1980 and in 1990 opened Over the Moon Dance Studio in Castlemaine Victoria, a school whose central theme still rests on the compliment of yoga to dance. The school has become quite a cultural hub in the local community, hosting a wide range of movement disciplines, workshops and dance forms. Some 300 people ranging from toddlers to seniors attend Over the Moon weekly.
Edna continues to share her skills and experience with students and educators around Australia as an artist in residence in primary, secondary and early childhood settings. She regularly presents as a workshop leader for Department of Education professional development workshops and has worked as a teacher of Early Childhood Movement and Music at the Bendigo Regional Institute of Technology and introduced the concept of using Yoga in Early Childhood Education to this course.
Having taught many young people on an ongoing basis, from early childhood through to young adulthood, Edna has a unique insight into the influence that Yoga education can have on the development of young people. This has led to a belief in the importance of helping young people to develop a healthy relationship to their body and mind in creative ways.

After training as a classic dancer, Maggie worked for two decades in advertising and publishing successfully climbing the corporate ladder - but always with a heavy heart. Whilst on a corporate function in 2000, Maggie was involved in an accident that, whilst not life threatening, turned out to be one of those defining moments when you consider all that you have and all that you are. Little did she know at the time that a complete “U-Turn” was about to take place…

When recuperating from the accident (major hand injury) and nurturing both the physical and mental wounds, Bikram Yoga found Maggie and she began to use its healing effects as part of her “head, heart and hand” therapy. Maggie also knew, almost from the very first class, that Bikram Yoga would become an integral part of her life.

Maggie resigned from the corporate world in 2005 and went to L.A. to study under Bikram Choudhury. She then taught full time at various Melbourne studios before opening her own Bikram Studio in 2006 in Glen Waverley. Towards the end of 2007, Maggie took over ownership and management of Bikram Yoga South Melbourne.

11.15 am              Greg Cooper                                                     ASHTANGA YOGA CENTRE MELBOURNE

Greg Cooper - Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne
A complete change of life in his late 20s prompted Greg's interest in Ashtanga yoga. After an initial start, following a friend who maintained a daily practice, Greg started a small group of people who began practising in his house under the guidance of a local yoga teacher. From there, chance led to him taking up a 9 month apprenticeship with Louisa Sear in Byron Bay; a student booked to study with her had to drop out, and Greg was asked to take up his place. He continued deepening his experience by travelling to India in 1994 and studying in Mysore with Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga's founder, Sri Pattabhi Jois. He has kept his practice fresh and alive by practising with Manju Jois, Graeme Northfield, Dena Kingsburg, Tomas Zorzo, John Scott, Louisa Sear, Matthew Sweeney, Nicky Knoff, Simon Borg-Olivier and David Williams, who visit his Centre in Melbourne to hold workshops.

If you are thinking of attending his class at Yoga Expo, expect a sound introduction to the foundations of Ashtanga Vinyasa, how breath guides movement in a flowing sequence. His emphasis is on building strength and flexibility in a balanced approach that employs correct alignment, steady eye focus, conscious breathing and internal locks (bandhas). Greg believes that the benefits of Ashtanga yoga are available to anyone who is willing to develop a deeper connection to their breathing.

Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness and is open to all levels. The combination of yoga postures with detailed breath patterns and specific repetition of sounds makes the practice particularly transformative. Each set of exercises targets particular areas of the physical body but also the energetic meridians of the body that helps release blockages. If you’re ready to let go of the past or to embrace personal empowerment in your life, then this is the practice for you.

12.45 pm              John Ogilvie                                                     BYRON YOGA CENTRE

Celebrating its 20th year of serving the yoga community, Byron Yoga Centre offers pre-eminent yoga teacher training courses, classes, workshops and retreats in Byron Bay, Sydney and internationally.

JOHN OGILVIE
John is the founder and Director of Byron Yoga Centre.  He has been teaching for over 20 years and offers his wealth of experience to teach others how to teach, heading up an internationally well-regarded Teacher Training Program at the Centre
John invites us to challenge ourselves, but at the same time encourages a light-heartedness in our approach to yoga and to ourselves.

BYRON YOGA CENTRE’S STYLE – PURNA YOGA
‘Purna’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘complete’ or ‘full’ and encapsulates the unique style of yoga that is taught at Byron Yoga Centre.
“Purna also means integrated”, says John.  “And this is what our approach to yoga is all about”.
John enthuses that yoga is about a lot more than just the physical postures.  Purna Yoga teaches the wholistic path to yoga that is embodied within the ancient system called ‘Astanga Yoga’ or the ‘8-Limbs’.  Asana (the yoga postures) is just one of the 8 limbs which also shares equal emphasis with the other limbs including Pranayama (breath control), meditation, and a code of personal and social yogic ‘ethics’ (the yamas & niyamas).

“Our classes are a reflection of these principals”, says John.  “yoga philosophies, for example that of ahimsa (non violence), are threaded throughout our classes”.

This helps bring about a deeper understanding of the key yogic values including diet and lifestyle aspirations.  Many Byron Yoga Centre Teacher Trainees discover, as a consequence, that yoga becomes for them a ‘way of life’.

“If all that you are interested in is the Asana (postures), then our courses may not be for you!” John sums up.

MARK
Mark Breadner has been practicing yoga for over thirty-five years, after being introduced as a child by his mum, a yoga teacher. The roots of Mark’s teachings come from a background working in the field of Somatic Psychotherapy, studying and practicing many of the more popular styles of yoga and in-depth studies of Tibetan Buddhism. He has taught yoga for 20 years and has devoted the last decade to training yoga teachers, through the Heart of Yoga Association, Nature Care College and now BodyMindLife Yoga. Mark’s extensive work in corrective exercise therapy and injury rehabilitation, combined with qualifications in Exercise Kinesiology through the Chek Institute has led him to work and travel regularly with elite athletes such as members of the Australian Olympic Swimming Team and members of the Rip Curl pro-surf team.

His years of work and study in complementary Eastern and Western systems of health have led Mark to develop a holistic system of healing called “The Five Pillars of Health and Wellbeing”. Through this system, Mark’s focus is to help people heal themselves through life-style observances and practices that strengthen and purify the nervous system, increase vitality in the body and serenity in the mind. He teaches people to self-regulate – to recognize where they are out of balance, and to apply specific practices that restore harmony, balance and the natural flow of energy (prana). 3.45 pm                Bettina Mitchell                                                YOGA TREE

Bettina Mitchell. I have been interested in health and fitness all my life. I’ve given most things a go; equestrian events, ballet, skiing, gym workouts and of course aerobics and all its variations.  But nothing has inspired me and changed my life as significantly as yoga.
Although I’d been a keen Bikram practitioner for over 3 years, shortly after the Yoga Tree introduced the Baron Baptiste Power Vinyasa I was hooked and decided to do his teacher training  in Mexico in 2004. In my endeavor to continue to grow and develop both as a practitioner and a teacher of yoga, I have furthered my studies with Nicky Knoff, one of Australia’s most respected yoga teacher trainers, completing the foundation level training in August 2006.
My passion is yoga for therapy, empowering the individual through fluid movement, body alignment & strength.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCE                                                                                        The Govinda Valley Kirtan Band

Kirtan is at the heart of yoga. It is the essential expression of the yogic experience of flow and unity...a profound celebration of life through music. The music and mantra tangibly transports us beyond the mundane and into the realm of the spirit.

From the very beginning of Yoga Expo, an interactive community kirtan event has been performed in the mainstage area as the final unifying experience of the day. For a few blissful minutes, 1000-2000 like-minded souls come and sing together with one voice... a truly sacred experience!

This year we are very, very fortunate to have the Govinda Valley Kirtan Band with us in Melbourne. The band is comprised of Holli, Raj and Matthew from the Govinda Valley Yoga Retreat Centre just south of Sydney. All three are dedicated bhakti yogis and accredited yoga teachers. Kirtan is very obviously the love of their life and they have a unique and profound ability to share that experience with others... This promises to be a very rare and special event.
